Vetiver Essential Oil
Last summer, I fell in love.
As is usual for me, the 'normal' and 'ordinary' hold little appeal. And Vetiver is anything but ordinary. To me, Vetiver is strong, earthy and reminds me of yester years. It's a strong scent and not easy to use as it's very viscous. Did I say earthy? It also reminds me of the beautiful scent of earth after a rain. And to me, sensual.
Aromatherapy experts will tell you it smells like Patchouli with a hint of lemon. Vetiver is a grass that is found in Western and Southern India. It's a perennial and a native of these regions. It's tall stems have rigid leaves and brownish-purple flowers. I also like that the entire plant, roots, stems, leaves et all are used for various purposes. In centuries past, the plant was used to thatch roofs and fill bedding. The aroma kept bugs away. Another favorite aspect is that while the roots have been used for centuries for perfumery (most top brands like Guerlain, Dior and Chanel have perfumes that are either called the same name or uses it as a key ingredient), it is also added to flavor food and drinks. And at Mayur Naturals, we love food based ingredients.
Perhaps what endeared me to Vetiver most is the effect it had on me. I am sensitive to energies to begin with and this oil had an instant grounding effect on me as it was calming. I remember one night when I couldn't sleep, my brain would not quit and I got out of bed and tried on what later became the Mobius blend on my leg. After a few minutes, I went back to sleep and slept like a baby.
Benefits of Vetiver
There are many articles on the benefits of Vetiver. There are physical as well as mental benefits. Vetiver is anti-inflamatory and an anti-septic. It is said to heal scars and wounds and minimize scars. It is also a powerful anti-oxidant with a ORAC of 74,300 µTE/100g. (ORAC stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity. It tells you the antioxidant capacity of a food item. This was developed by the USDA researchers. For instance: Kale= 1,770) Vetiver Oil is useful for anxiety, addressing anger, fighting burnout/exhaustion and coping with fear or insecurity. It is grounding and calming. This article talks about Vetiver helping ADHD patients. For spiritual work, it is often associated with the Root Chakra and maybe why it was used to increase abundance in folk magic.
The Shaman and Mobius Blends contain Vetiver. The Shaman Blend is a more refreshing blend with other Essential Oils like Lavender, Rosemary and Orange and is a top favorite among users. The Mobius Blend is a more intense, earthy blend with Bergamot. We love them both!
Pregnant women and lactating mothers should always be careful when using any Essential Oils. I have heard it said that because of the relaxing quality of Vetiver, pregnant women and lactating mothers should not use Vetiver. You should always check with your health care professional before using new products.
